The Prisoner’s Thanksgiving | Why Cosplaying Feast Days in Captivity Is Spiritual Felony
INTRODUCTION
Imagine a convict sitting inside a maximum-security penitentiary. The calendar on his concrete wall reads the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving Day. In his heart, he yearns for the nostalgia of home. He misses the family table, the gathering of his people, and the traditional feast.
Now, imagine this prisoner decides he is going to "celebrate" Thanksgiving anyway.
He demands that the warden unlock his cell doors and let him go home for the day. When the warden refuses, the convict decides to celebrate Thanksgiving in his cell. He gathers a couple of paper napkins from the mess hall, places a stale piece of prison lunchmeat and bread on his metal sink, and declares to his cellmates: "Look at me! I am keeping Thanksgiving! I have the lunchmeat as my turkey and the bread as my dressing.”
If you saw this man, you would call him delusional. He has no turkey (the central component), no stove to roast it on, no kitchen, no host to manage the event, and, above all, he is legally incarcerated behind steel bars. He cannot declare himself “celebrating at home" simply because he brought a piece of lunchmeat into a jail cell.
Yet, this exact, embarrassing delusion plays out every single year across America in the land of our captivity. Scattered Hebrews, living under a divine judicial sentence in foreign lands, put on fringe apparel, set up residential spaces or rent buildings, bake and cook food, and claim they are "observing the feast days of YAH." They scream at the top of their lungs that they are keeping Torah, all while completely ignoring the raw legal reality of their incarceration: You are in prison, and YAH confiscated your food and stove (altar & sacrifices), the kitchen (The Temple), the property (the land), the host (king and prince), and the chef (the Priest).
It is time to strip away the camp politics, burn down the religious performances, and look at the raw, unbending legal truth of the Tanakh.
I. THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS: THE CELL BLOCK VS. THE DIASPORA
To understand why "playing temple priest" in America is an act of spiritual treason, we must place the prison cell next to our current dispersion under the law.
Here is the breakdown of the infrastructure of covenant feasting mapped out:
- Thanksgiving in Penitentiary
- The Turkey: The Central Sacrifice (Zevah)
- The Stove: The Bronze Altar
- The Kitchen: The Central Sanctuary / Temple
- The Chef: The Levitical High Priest
- The Host: The King & Prince (Melekh/Sar)
- The Family Home: The Holy Land of Israel
- Hosea 3:4 Legal Status in Captivity (Divine Confiscation)
- The Turkey: Stripped — "Without a sacrifice"
- The Stove: Stripped — No sanctified altar
- The Kitchen: Stripped — "Without a monument"
- The Chef: Stripped — "Without an Ephod"
- The Host: Stripped — "Without a King/Prince"
- The Family Home: Stripped — Cast out of His sight
1. The Main Component: The Turkey vs. The Sacrifice (Zevah)
- The Prisoner: You cannot have a legitimate Thanksgiving dinner without the main centerpiece, the turkey. A slice of processed prison meat is a counterfeit replacement.
- The Exile: The pilgrimage feasts (Shalosh Regalim) prescribed in Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16 legally require central-sanctuary offerings (Zevah). YAH commands in Deuteronomy 16:16 that no man shall appear before Him empty-handed, and it is not referencing money. Without a legitimate, accepted sacrificial offering, the central component of the feast is gone.
2. The Apparatus: The Stove vs. The Bronze Altar
- The Prisoner: Even if an inmate somehow smuggled a whole turkey into his cell, where is he going to cook it? He lacks the apparatus, the stove.
- The Exile: Sacrifices cannot be burned on a backyard barbecue grill in Atlanta, Chicago, or London. The Torah strictly forbids burning offerings on unauthorized ground (Deuteronomy 12:13–14). Without the consecrated Bronze Altar placed in the location where YAH chose to set His Name, you have no apparatus to present an offering.
3. The Venue: The Kitchen vs. The Temple
- The Prisoner: A feast requires a legitimate location: the family home and kitchen. A prison cellblock is a place of punishment, not a feast hall.
- The Exile: Deuteronomy 16:2, 5–6 explicitly legally restricts pilgrimage feast execution: "Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates... but at the place which YAH thy Elohim shall choose to place His name in." The venue is non-negotiable. America is not Zion; it is foreign land under a covenant curse (Deuteronomy 28:64).
4. The Authority: The Chef vs. The Levitical High Priest (Ephod)
- The Prisoner: A structured feast requires a competent chef to manage the preparation, cook the food, and ensure safety.
- The Exile: The feast calendar and sanctuary services were administered exclusively by the consecrated Levitical Priesthood bearing the sacred oracle (Ephod). Modern camp leaders, self-appointed "pastors," and internet teachers playing priest in captivity are illegal usurpers operating without legal lineage, sanctuary consecration, or an Ephod.
5. The Governance: The Hosts vs. The King & Prince (Melekh / Sar)
- The Prisoner: The convict cannot grant himself permission to host a feast or leave; correctional executives and wardens hold legal authority over his sentence.
- The Exile: The national operating infrastructure required a reigning Melekh (King) and Sar (Prince) to enforce national alignment, sanctuary order, and judicial righteousness.
6. The Property: Home vs. The Holy Land
- The Prisoner: Above all, the prisoner is locked in a penitentiary. He does not own the property, he cannot roam freely, and he cannot pretend he is at his family estate. Breaking out of prison before his sentence has completed is a crime that results in swift capture, extended sentence, or death.
- The Exile: Israel was cast out of the Promised Land because we defiled it (Leviticus 18:28). YAH's eyes are perpetually upon Canaan (Deuteronomy 11:12), but we were banished into foreign captivity, cast out of His immediate sight, severed from the agricultural soil required to calculate the Aviv crop stage (Deuteronomy 16:1). The captive must recognize where he stands: he is serving a divine sentence in the land of his enemies. To mistake the prison yard for the promised land or an attempt to escape to the promised land is to embrace a deadly delusion.
II. THE AGRICULTURAL BLACKOUT: SEVERED FROM THE SOIL OF AVIV
In the delusional effort to perform high holy days in captivity, modern exilic camps rely heavily on astronomical formulas, rabbinic calendars, or internet-based reports from foreign territories. But the Torah’s calendar mechanism is not an abstract mathematical equation or moon-watching on a smartphone app, it is bound directly and physically to the agricultural soil of the Promised Land.
According to Deuteronomy 16:1, the declaration of the first month of the biblical year (Chodesh Ha-Aviv) requires direct inspection of a specific crop stage in the localized soil of Israel:
"Observe the month of Aviv [Chodesh Ha-Aviv], and keep the passover unto YAH thy Elohim: for in the month of Aviv YAH thy Elohim brought thee forth out of Egypt by night."
1. What Is Aviv? (The Physical Requirement)
In Biblical Hebrew, the word Aviv (אָבִיב) is not a proper name for a spring season, nor is it an abstract lunar phase. It is a precise agricultural term describing a specific stage of grain development: barley that is green, tender, yet filled with starch, where the head has formed and reached a state of maturity ready for the wave-sheaf offering (Omer) (Leviticus 2:14, Exodus 9:31).
The Torah required that the first month of the year be anchored to this physical, agricultural milestone in the Promised Land so that the firstfruits offering (Omer) could be legally presented at the Central Sanctuary Altar during the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:10–11).
2. Banishment as a Judicial Severance
When YAH executed the sentence of exile and cast Israel out of His sight, He intentionally severed our physical connection to the agricultural soil required to calculate the Aviv.
- No Soil Access: An exile living in North America, West Africa, or Western Europe cannot walk the fields of Canaan to physically inspect barley heads.
- No Sanctuary Authority: The declaration of the Aviv and the new month was the official judicial duty of the Levites and the High Priest at the Central Sanctuary, not private individuals acting independently.
- Geographical Microclimates: Agriculture develops according to the unique geographical, rainfall, and thermal conditions of the Holy Land, conditions that cannot be replicated or calculated from foreign countries.
By banishing us into dispersion, YAH placed an operational blackout on the calendar calculation mechanism. Stripped of the Land, Israel lost the ability to legally, accurately, and collectively declare the beginning of the biblical year in its proper season.
3. The Delusion of Exilic Calendar Calculations
To bypass this legal lockout, modern exilic camps, leaders, and internet teachers invent various unauthorized shortcuts to force feast dates on foreign ground:
- Lunar-Only Calculations: Determining feast dates exclusively by moon phases, completely discarding the explicit Torah requirement of physical Aviv barley maturity in the soil.
- Rabbinic / Hillel II Calendars: Adopting fixed mathematical, post-exilic rabbinic calendars created centuries after the Second Temple’s destruction to replace direct soil inspection.
- Telecommunication Scouting: Relying on internet photos or “ Aviv sighting” reports from modern geopolitical entities in the Middle East, pretending that an exile in dispersion can contract out sanctuary duties to people scouting the land.
All of these hacks share a common root: the refusal to accept that we are in prison. Just as a convict cannot order a home-cooked Thanksgiving turkey into his jail cell, an exile in dispersion cannot force an Aviv calculation while severed from the soil of Canaan. Attempting to do so is an act of spiritual presumption (azaf), treating the judicial penalty of exile as if it never happened.
III. HOSEA 3:4 — THE UNBENDING JUDICIAL STRIPPING
The reason the exile lacks these core components is not a mistake; it is a divine penal sentence explicitly recorded in the Tanakh:
Hosea 3:4: "For the children of Israel shall abide many days [yamim rabbim] without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image [matsevah], and without an ephod, and without teraphim."
Read the legal sentence again! YAH HIMSELF STRIPPED THE INFRASTRUCTURE.
When YAH banished Israel into captivity, He put our national operating infrastructure into judicial quarantine. He locked the doors of the sanctuary, revoked the authority of the altar, confiscated the Ephod, and sent us into dispersion without a King.
When rebellious Hebrew factions set up DIY high holy days in America, they are committing direct Contempt of Court. They are acting like the inmate who slaps bologna on a sink and screams, "The Warden didn't lock me up, I’m still free to celebrate Thanksgiving!” They are denying the reality of Hosea 3:4. They are pretending that the sentence was never passed, that the infrastructure was never stripped, and that foreign captivity is just a fun location to host a religious convention.
IV. EZEKIEL 20: THE CRIME OF UNAUTHORIZED GIFTS (MATTANOT)
What does YAH say about exiles who attempt to force sacrificial worship while sitting under a judicial sentence in captivity?
In Ezekiel 20, the elders of Israel sat before the prophet in Babylonian exile. They wanted to maintain their spiritual identity and offer gifts/sacrifices on holy days as usual while remaining rebellious in heart, and in captivity. YAH handed down a brutal indictment:
Ezekiel 20:31, 39: "For when ye offer your gifts [mattanot]... do ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day? and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith YAH Elohim, I will not be enquired of by you... Go ye, serve ye every one his idols... but pollute ye My holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols."
YAH calls DIY exilic feasts what they actually are: pollution and unauthorized gifts (mattanot). You are not doing YAH any favors by cosplaying holy days in captivity.
When you bake bread on foreign land, calculate false calendar dates according to the moon, and claim you are "keeping the Passover" in America without a Temple, a Bronze Altar, or a Levitical High Priest, you are polluting His Holy Name. You are attributing human performative actions to the Heavenly Judge who explicitly told you He stripped those things from you in Hosea 3:4!
V. WHAT COVENANT OBEDIENCE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE IN PRISON
What is a convict supposed to do if he cannot keep Thanksgiving in prison? He is supposed to sit down, serve his time, reflect and repent on the crimes that put him there, and obey the baseline rules of his confinement.
He does not conduct “business as usual”; he accepts his chastisement (Musar).
The Tanakh outlines the exact same protocol for Israel in captivity:
- Accept the Chastisement (Musar): Leviticus 26:41 demands that we "accept of the punishment of [our] iniquity,” declaring YAH righteous for locking us up in exile and ceasing all performative actions.
- Confess Ancestral and Personal Treason: 1 Kings 8:47–48 requires the exiles to bethink themselves, turn their hearts back to YAH, and pray towards Zion: "We have sinned, we have done perversely, we have committed wickedness."
- Guard the Portable Covenant Sign: Exodus 31:16–17 and Ezekiel 20:20 establish that the seventh-day weekly Sabbath (Shabbat Bereshit) is the perpetual, portable sign (Ot) that travels into every prison house of our dispersion. It requires no Temple, no Bronze Altar, and no physical land of Israel.
Guarding the weekly Sabbath in quiet purity, confessing our sins facing Jerusalem, and accepting our exilic sentence is the only legal protocol YAH authorized for captives in exile.
CONCLUSION
It is time for the scattered remnant in America and across the earth to wake up from spiritual delusion.
Stop letting camp leaders and internet teachers sell you counterfeit tickets to fake feasts in foreign wildernesses. Stop playing house in the penitentiary! You cannot feast your way out of a judicial sentence. You cannot cosplay Temple priests while sitting under the wrath of Hosea 3:4.
YAH cast us out of His sight so we could feel the weight of our treason. He stripped our infrastructure so we would stop defiling His holy things with our idolatrous hearts.
The inmate who wants to go home does not act foolishly in his cell; he humbles himself, submits to the court, and waits for the Governor to grant a pardon or for his sentence to end.
Drop the DIY high holy days. Drop the exilic calendar calculations. Turn your face toward Zion, accept the Musar of your captivity, guard the weekly seventh-day Sabbath in truth, and cry out to YAH with a broken heart. Only when Israel stops the religious performances and embraces true repentance (Teshuvah) will the Sovereign Judge break the gates of our captivity, gather His remnant under His mighty hand, and restore us to His Holy Mountain in Zion.
