12 Monthly Challenges to Elevate Your Faith | October's Faith Challenge | The Cleanse of the Home | Removing the Idols in Plain Sight

We have guarded our mornings, our speech, our tables, and our night watches. Now, in the tenth month of our journey, we turn our attention to the physical space where we dwell.

Faith is not an abstract concept that lives only in our minds; it manifests in our surroundings. Our homes are meant to be sanctuaries, places set apart from the confusion, noise, and spiritual noise of the outer world. Yet, without realizing it, we often allow our living spaces to accumulate clutter that drains our energy, steals our time, and pulls our hearts away from the Creator.

This month, we perform a deep physical and spiritual audit: The Cleanse of the Home.

  • 1. TIME THIEVES
    • Entertainment & infinite loops
  • 2. WEALTH TRAPS
    • Items feeding vanity or status
  • 3. SHADOW OBJECTS
    • Reminders of past compromises

The Concept of the Idol

When we think of idols, we often imagine ancient statues of stone or wood. But in its true essence, an idol is anything that takes the devotion, time, attention, or trust that belongs solely to the Almighty.

An idol can be a screen that dominates your living room and consumes hours of your life. It can be possessions bought to impress others that leave you financially strained. It can be items tied to old, toxic habits or unwholesome influences that you refuse to let go of. When our spaces are filled with distractions, our spirits reflect that same disorder.

The Challenge: Identify and Remove Three Distractions

Your challenge this month is to walk through your home with discernment and intentionally remove three specific items or categories of items that act as distractions, time-wasters, or subtle idols in your life.

The Criteria for Removal:

  • The Time Thief: An object or device that routinely drains hours of your day without bringing true value, rest, or spiritual growth (e.g., streaming boxes, gaming consoles, or unread clutter that causes paralysis).
  • The Vanity Trap: Possessions maintained purely out of status, pride, or material attachment that keep your focus on the physical world rather than the spiritual.
  • The Shadow Object: Anything linked to past compromises, unrighteous relationships, or habits that you have outgrown. If it brings confusion or bad memories into your space, it does not belong in your home.

Why This Matters for Us

Just as our ancestors had to thoroughly cleanse their dwellings of leaven during appointed seasons, we must periodically purge our environments of spiritual clutter. A set-apart people requires a set-apart environment. When you clear out what distracts you, you create quiet space where devotion can thrive without competition.

The Cleanse of the Home: Scripture Guide

Ground your home audit in these ancient instructions:

  • Deuteronomy 7:26: "Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing."
  • Joshua 24:14: "Now therefore fear YAH, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye YAH."
  • Ezekiel 14:3: "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face..."
  • Psalm 101:2–3: "I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes..."

How to Execute Your Home Audit

Walk Room by Room: Start with the main living area, then move to your bedroom and study space. Stand in the center of the room and ask: Does everything in this room serve a righteous purpose or bring peace?
  • Dispose or Donate Responsibly: If the item is inherently harmful or compromised, destroy or discard it. If it is simply a distraction for you but harmless (like excess material goods), donate it to someone in need.
  • Replace Clutter with Peace: Once the space is clear, do not fill it with more material items. Let the empty space remind you of the quiet clarity you are building in your walk.

Closing Statement: When your dwelling is clean, orderly, and free of subtle idols, your mind follows suit, leaving room for undivided focus on what truly matters.
