Tefillah | A Teshuvah Prayer for Exiles | The Children of Israel
(The Confession of Banishment and Supplication Toward Restored Zion)
(Instruction: Stand or kneel facing East toward Jerusalem and the Promised Land [1 Kings 8:47–48; Daniel 6:10], and spread forth your hands towards heaven [1 Kings 8:22]. Pray this with a broken spirit, taking personal and national ownership of the Covenant sentence.)
I. ACKNOWLEDGING THE SOVEREIGN JUDGE & HIS RIGHTEOUS SENTENCE
O YAH, Elohim of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov,
The Great, Awesome, and Revering Elohim who keeps covenant and mercy with those who love You and guard Your commandments:
We stand before You today scattered across the four corners of the earth, dwelling in the lands of our captors, far from the Holy Land You gave to our fathers. We do not approach You in self-righteousness, nor do we come boasting of our own deeds, for we have walked contrary to your laws from the days of our youth. We come facing Your Holy Mountain in Zion, the place where You chose to set Your Name, acknowledging that You alone are righteous, and we are covered in shame, for we have sinned perversely.
Yah, You are entirely just in all that has come upon us. Every curse written in the Torah has overtaken us because we refused to listen to Your voice and turned away from Your commandments. You warned us through Your servant Moses, and Your servants the prophets, saying that if we defiled Your land, the land would spew us out. We scoffed at Your warnings, we hardened our necks, and we followed after the idols and stubbornness of our own hearts.
Therefore, You executed Your lawful sentence upon us. You cast us out of Your immediate sight. You stripped us of our national infrastructure, our King, our Altar, our Temple, and our Sacred Oracle, the Ephod. You scattered us among the nations to serve wood and stone under the iron yoke of our enemies. We acknowledge today that our captivity is not an accident of history, but the righteous execution of Your divine justice. We accept the chastisement of our iniquity (Musar).
II. CONFESSING ANCESTRAL AND PERSONAL TREASON
O Sovereign YAH, we confess our iniquity and the iniquity of our fathers:
We have sinned. We have done perversely. We have committed wickedness and turned aside from Your righteous judgments. We do not separate ourselves from the rebellion of our ancestors, for we have inherited their lies, their pride, and their stiff-necked ways.
- We confess that our ancestors defiled Your Holy Mountain with unauthorized altars, pagan customs, and foreign gods, provoking You to anger in the sight of the nations.
- We confess that even in the lands of our dispersion, our people have sought to blend in with the heathen, desiring to serve foreign gods (deities), pursue worldly vanities, and adopt the ways of the nations that hold us captive.
- We confess the pride and hardness of our hearts, that even in our spiritual awakening, we have manufactured counterfeit, makeshift feasts, playing “temple priest” in the penitentiary, offering unauthorized gifts (mattanot), and ignoring Your call to brokenness and true repentance (Teshuvah).
- We confess our desecration of Your Feasts and our refusal to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand.
Elohim, our uncircumcised hearts are humbled today. We stop pointing fingers at You, at our captors, at the nations, or at history. We point the finger at our forefathers, our fathers, us, and our blind leaders who cause the people to err. We take ownership of our covenant treason. We have sinned against You, and You alone are righteous in Your judgment.
III. PLEADING THE ANCIENT COVENANT & GUARDING THE PORTABLE SIGN
Yet, O YAH, You declared in Your Torah through Your servant Moses:
“If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers... if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity; then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.”
Remember Your covenant, O YAH! Look down from Your holy habitation in Heaven upon the remnant of Your scattered flock. We have no bronze altar to offer sacrifices; we have no High Priest standing in Jerusalem to make atonement for us. We bring You the only offering left in our captivity: the confession of our broken hearts and the calves of our lips.
We commit this day to guard Your portable covenant sign, Your holy seventh-day Sabbath (Shabbat Bereshit), in all our dwellings across the diaspora. We separate our households from the commerce, pollution, and distraction of the heathen. We choose life, we choose blessing, and we set our undivided devotion upon You alone.
IV. THE SUPPLICATION FOR RESTORATION
Hear from Heaven, Your dwelling place, the prayer and supplication of Your scattered people, and maintain our cause!
- Break the hardness of Israel’s heart across the diaspora. Awaken our sleep-walking people from cultural amnesia and religious performances.
- Grant us a spirit of true brokenness, that we may cease trying to feast our way out of judgment and instead sit under Your discipline with reverence and quiet endurance.
- Guard our homes and children from the defilement, idolatry, and spiritual darkness of the lands of our exile.
- Direct our hearts perpetually toward Zion, holding fast to Your promise that You will one day gather Your remnant under Your mighty hand, pass us under Your judicial rod, purge out the rebels, and bring the faithful home to Your Holy Mountain in Israel.
We turn our faces to Zion. We bow before Your judicial decree. We wait upon You, O YAH, for You are our King, our Lawgiver, and our Redeemer.
In the name of YAH Elohim of Israel, HalleluYAH! Praise the Power of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya’akov, for He is worthy, most worthy, definitely worthy to be praised! Selah.
Elohim still loves you, Israel. The call remains the same: Choose Life, Choose Blessing, Choose Undivided Devotion. Repent, Return, and be free from the shadows of gross darkness.
