Two Witnesses | Not Two Stories | Exposing the Flawed Logic of Modern Legal Gatekeepers
There is a dangerous kind of blindness that happens when men sit in elevated seats, cloaked in titles such as Moreh, and decide that their status gives them immunity from basic logic. We see it all the time in our congregations and online: a woman brings forward a sound, text-backed observation, and instead of engaging the text, the "experts" dismiss it with a wave of the hand. Arrogance loves a title, but pride hates the truth when the truth exposes its sloppy scholarship.
The debate centers around a foundational pillar of Torah law: the requirement of multiple witnesses. Too many self-appointed leaders are running around teaching a dangerous, social media-style jurisprudence, claiming that if one person sees a wrong done on Monday, and another person sees a similar wrong done on Thursday, by the same person, you can smash those two separate incidents together and call it a "two-witness rule.” One Moreh claimed that this nonsense applied to the Bill Cosby conviction, where multiple women, through their own sexual assault claims, satisfied the law in Deuteronomy 19:15. I disagreed with the fool, but to no avail.
Let’s pull back the curtain on this intellectual dishonesty. Does the Torah actually permit stacking separate, uncorroborated events to manufacture a conviction? Absolutely not. Let’s look at the raw truth, straight from the text of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament).
The Rock-Solid Standard of the Torah
The instructions given in the wilderness are exact. They leave no room for arbitrary courtroom math or convenient loopholes designed to trap people.
- Deuteronomy 19:15
"One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin, that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established."
- Deuteronomy 17:6
"Whoever is deserving of death shall be put to death on the testimony of two or three witnesses; he shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness."
Notice the singular focus of the law. It does not say that a pattern shall be established by random opinions. It says the matter (in Hebrew, davar, meaning the specific word, thing, or distinct charge) shall be established.
Why Separate Incidents Cannot Be Stacked
In a legitimate judicial standard, context and event boundaries matter. Let’s break down why the "separate events" argument fails every test of biblical integrity:
- They Are Distinct Legal Events: If Man A sins against Victim B, and Witness 1 is standing there, that is Incident One. If weeks later, Man A sins against Victim C, and Witness 2 is standing there, that is Incident Two. These are entirely separate offenses involving different victims, different timelines, and different circumstances. Neither incident has a second witness. Pooling them together is not corroboration; it is creative fiction.
- The Purpose of the Safeguard: The multi-witness mandate was never meant to be a weapon of convenience for judges or community leaders. It is a divine shield designed to protect against false accusations, malicious targeting, and isolated misunderstandings. If separate accusers with separate, uncorroborated stories could pool their claims into a communal bucket, the safeguard becomes completely useless. Anyone could be targeted by stitching together unrelated grievances.
- True Corroboration Requires Shared Observation: For a matter to be "established," the witnesses must stand as joint observers to the same incident, testifying to the same facts at the same time. If Witness A sees one thing and Witness B sees another thing entirely, they are testifying about two different realities.
Legal and Ethical Implications
- Standard of Proof: A single perspective is inherently subjective or prone to bias. Requiring two or three distinct testimonies introduces a layer of objective verification.
- Accountability for Accusers: In related statutes (such as Deuteronomy 19:16–19), a witness found to be bearing false witness faces the exact punishment they intended to bring upon the accused, reinforcing the gravity of bringing forward testimony.
Tearing Down the Culture of Condescension
It takes a profound level of pride to look at clear textual boundaries and bend them just to win an argument or maintain control over a narrative. When leaders rely on intimidation, ego, and historical gatekeeping instead of sound exegesis, they reveal that they are more interested in protecting their own authority than protecting true justice.
Truth doesn’t bow to a fancy title. It doesn't matter how many people defer to a self-proclaimed teacher; if their interpretation collapses under the weight of basic scriptural grammar and logic, it is counterfeit.
The instructions are clear. The boundaries are set. Let the text mean what it says, and let the prideful pride themselves right out of sound doctrine.
