The Rot in the Crown | How Multiplied Wives Hollowed Out David’s Heart

We must tear down the romanticized, sugar-coated myth of King David. Religion loves to paint David as an untouchable icon who was loved by YAH and could do no wrong. He simply had a single, unfortunate moment of weakness on a rooftop.

The raw, unvarnished Torah reality is far darker: David was a chronic lawbreaker whose heart was systematically hollowed out by his own unchecked appetite long before he ever laid eyes on Bahtshevah (Bathsheba).

When you track his trajectory under Hebraic Jurisprudence, you see a man who abandoned the pure devotion of his youth and evolved into a hardened, self-indulgent monarch who trampled the holy Commandments of YAH.

The Commandment Defied: The Torah’s Explicit Warning

Centuries before David ever took the throne, the Torah laid down the mandatory Constitutional Law for every king who would ever rule over Israel:

"Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away..."Deuteronomy 17:17

Notice the exact cause-and-effect structure built into the Law of the King:

  • The Transgression: Multiplying wives.
  • The Inevitable Judgment: The inevitable turning away and hollowing out of the king's heart.

YAH did not issue this as a casual suggestion. He issued it because taking multiple women turns a king’s heart away from undivided devotion to the Law, converting a shepherd into a self-serving tyrant.

The Transformation: Before vs. After the Multiplication

The scriptural record exposes a radical, alarming contrast between David the Shepherd Boy and David the Multiplied King.

1. David Before the Multiplication (The Undivided Heart)

  • His Standard: He refused to stretch out his hand against the anointed (1 Samuel 24:6). He possessed a tender conscience; his heart smote him merely for cutting off the skirt of Saul’s robe. He wrote psalms praising the Almighty YAH.
  • His Focus (On YAH): He relied entirely on YAH’s strength, slinging stones at Goliath for the honor of the Almighty's Name, seeking zero carnal gratification.
  • His Bed: He was content with a humble life, walking in total dependence on the Most High.

2. David After the Multiplication (The Hollowed-Out Heart)

  • His Standard: He accumulated an extensive roster of wives and concubines across Hebron and Jerusalem (2 Samuel 3:2–5, 2 Samuel 5:13), directly violating Deuteronomy 17:17.
  • His Focus (On Self): His appetite became insatiable. Having a whole palace filled with women was no longer enough, he saw his neighbor's wife and felt entitled to take her too.
  • His Bed: His heart became so calloused that he could order the cold-blooded, premeditated murder of Uriah, eat his dinner, and carry on for nearly a year without a single tear of genuine repentance until Nathan cornered him.

The Fulfillment of Deuteronomy 17:17: "Despised Me"

The proof that David’s heart turned away as foretold in Deuteronomy 17:17 lies in the exact language YAH used when issuing his indictment in 2 Samuel 12:

"Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of YAH, to do evil in His sight?... because thou hast despised Me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife."2 Samuel 12:9–10

Compare the exact legal phrases:

  • Deuteronomy 17:17 warned: Multiplied wives will cause the king's heart to turn away.
  • 2 Samuel 12:9–10 fulfilled: YAH testifies that David despised the Commandment and despised YAH Himself.

To "despise" (בָּזָה / Bazah) means to view as worthless, to treat with contempt, to look down upon with disdain.

David didn't just stumble in a moment of passion; David looked at the Holy Law of Almighty YAH and treated it like trash - something for the common people. His multiplied wives had turned his heart completely against YAH and His Law. He began to view the Commandments as lower than his own carnal urges. He operated like a pagan monarch, using royal authority to steal another man's life and spouse, entirely unbothered by the holiness of YAH.

Closing Statement: David’s multiplied wives did not satisfy him, they corrupted him. They transformed a man after YAH’s own heart into a selfish adulterer and murderer who trampled the Torah to feed his flesh.
