Built on a Promise, Not Polygyny of the Flesh | The Raw Truth About The Origin of the Twelve Tribes of Jacob
There is a dangerous, self-serving myth circulating in the camp. Men who are eager to justify their own fleshly appetites point to the twelve patriarchs and proudly declare: "See! The nation of Israel was built on polygyny! YAH used four women to build the tribes, so polygyny is YAH’s ordained method!” Foolishness!! Stop limiting the power of Elohim! He doesn’t need to bring a nation into fruition based on behaviors and acts contrary to His Law of the one-flesh command.
That is not just bad theology; it is a blatant distortion of Scripture designed to protect human pride and condone man’s carnal lust.
Some have commented on previous post teachings or YouTube livestreams claiming that the nation was built on polygyny, asserting that referencing the "one-flesh" creation command is an attempt to circumvent historical fact. Let’s set the record straight: The Nation of Israel was built on the unconditional Promise made to Abraham, NOT on the practice of polygyny. YAH never instituted a law in favor of polygyny, it was instituted by man. It was the one-flesh marriage of Abraham and Sarah that this promise was built on. Even when Abraham tried to usurp the promise with the seed of Hagar, YAH forbid it!
To confuse YAH’s ability to fulfill His promise, despite human mess, with His original design is spiritual ignorance. YAH accepts men in their fallen states, but acceptance is not an endorsement, and tolerance is not a blessing. Men love to lie on YAH.
The Origin: A Web of Deception and Competition
If polygyny was YAH’s holy design for Jacob, why was it conceived through deception, rivalry, and heartbreak? Also, why did YAH institute Laws against it, specifically targeting what Jacob and Laban did?
Jacob did not set out to take multiple women (wives). He worked seven years for one woman: Rachel. He loved one woman. But Laban deceived Jacob on his wedding night, substituting Leah. Jacob was trapped in a web of Eastern trickery, and in his fleshly compromise, he took Rachel as well. This is the evil trickery of Laban and not Elohim. Elohim never had a hand in this mess. To attribute this evil to YAH is to despise His creation of the one-flesh. YAH changes not!
Then came the handmaids, Bilhah and Zilpah, thrown into the bed as human pawns in a bitter, jealous war between two sisters competing for a man's favor.
Look at the fruit of that house:
- Bitter jealousy and emotional agony between sisters (Genesis 30).
- Children weaponized as bargaining chips for a husband's nighttime attention.
- Hatred among brothers that culminated in the selling of Joseph into Egyptian slavery.
Do these facts imply that polygyny was ordained and sanctified by YAH or man? This was not a peaceful, holy model of divine order. It was a dysfunctional household fueled by human maneuverings. YAH did not command Jacob to take four women. Man’s trickery and fleshly compromise created the mess. Stop attributing polygyny to Elohim. He does not condone this behavior! This is the manner of the nations, specifically the seed of Cain. Laban was a part of the heathen nations.
The Legal Reality: The Covenant Wife and the Primogeniture Blessing
Here is the hard-hitting truth that defenders of polygyny love to bypass: In covenant law, there is only ONE primary covenant wife.
Even though Jacob loved Rachel, Leah was the covenant bride. Under the covenantal framework of Hebrew Law, she was the lawful, first-covenant wife of Jacob's household.
Watch how YAH honored the legal standing of the first covenant, even when Jacob tried to bypass it out of favoritism!
Jacob favored Joseph, the firstborn of Rachel, the woman of his personal choice, and tried to elevate Joseph to receive the double-portion birthright (Genesis 48). But where did the ultimate spiritual, kingly, and priestly blessings go? They went straight back to the sons of LEAH.
- The Priesthood (Levi): As the 3rd son of Leah, YAH established the Levitical Priesthood through Leah's line to carry the Torah and minister at the Altar.
- The Scepter (Judah): As the 4th son of Leah, the royal line of David came directly through Judah, Leah’s son.
Jacob tried to give the ultimate ruling authority to Joseph's line, but YAH’s covenant order stood firm. YAH honored the line of the first-covenant wife, proving that He does not validate man’s emotional favoritism over divine covenant order.
The Foundation: Abraham's Promise, Not Human Multiplication
To claim that Israel exists because of polygyny is to strip YAH of His glory and give it to human carnality.
YAH promised Abraham in Genesis 15 and Genesis 17 that his seed would be as the stars of heaven and the sand of the seashore. YAH made that covenant when Abraham had zero children.
"Is anything too hard for YAH?" — Genesis 18:14
Could YAH have built a nation of millions through one woman and one man? Absolutely. He brought a nation of millions out of Egypt from a small family! He brought life from Sarah’s dead womb. He caused barren women throughout Scripture to give birth when men thought it was impossible.; Samuel, Isaac, Jacob, etc.
YAH did not need Jacob to sleep with four women to fulfill the promise made to Abraham. YAH worked through the twelve sons because He is a covenant-keeping Elohim who remembers His word to Abraham, in spite of Jacob's messy household, not because of it.
Restricting the Flesh: Laws Instituted to Condemn and Contain Evil
YAH never instituted laws to promote or bless polygyny. He instituted legal guardrails to contain human carnality, protect vulnerable women, and prevent men from using their fleshly desires to destroy righteous order.
These legal principles were rooted in eternal righteousness long before Sinai, codified to expose the mess created when men departed from the original "one flesh" creation standard:
1. The Law Against Two Sisters (Leviticus 18:18)
"Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her lifetime."
Why did YAH establish this law? Look directly at the house of Jacob! Rachel and Leah spent their entire married lives in bitterness, rivalry, and spiritual agony because Jacob was bound to two sisters. YAH explicitly called this arrangement a vexation and legislated directly against it to forbid men from repeating the very dysfunction that broke the home of Jacob. If this was holy and righteous polygyny that our nation was built on by YAH, then why would YAH later change His mind? Let’s be thinkers!! This is the evil of men! YAH is cleaning up the mess that man created!
2. The Law of the Unloved Wife's Firstborn (Deuteronomy 21:15–17)
"If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated [unloved]... he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated..."
YAH acknowledges that polygyny almost always results in a "beloved" wife and an "unloved" wife. This law exists to prevent a prideful, emotion-driven man from robbing the innocent child of the unloved woman just because his flesh prefers the other. It is not an endorsement; it is a protection against injustice. Jacob did this not only in the blessings but also during his sons’ childhood. His favoritism of Joseph caused contention with the other siblings. Also, notice the language: “If a man have two wives…”, not “If a man take two wives…” This law occurred after they left Egypt where they had taken on the ways of the heathen. The laws were to correct them and cause them to be a light to the nations.
3. The Law of Betrothal and Rights (Exodus 21:10)
"If he take him another wife (if he marries someone else instead of the woman he is engaged to); her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage (shelter), shall he not diminish."
This was a heavy financial and covenantal burden designed to deter men from becoming engaged to one woman and then marrying another as Laban did this to Jacob. Under this law, a man could not simply marry a new woman and then abandon the woman whom he was first betrothed (engaged). He was legally obligated to provide full support without reduction or let her go free without having to reclaim the dowry given to her father. It is not a law of polygyny. This is to prevent what Laban did to Jacob- betrothed to Rachel but tricked into marriage with Leah. This prevents polygyny, not endorse it!!
Acceptance Is Not Divine Ordainment
Throughout the Scriptures, YAH accommodated the hard hearts and cultural brokenness of men to protect society from worse horrors.
- He allowed divorce provisions because of the hardness of their hearts but spoke out against it in Malachi 2:16.
- He allowed laws regulating slavery to protect servants from total destruction but forbade Israel from treating their brothers as slaves. Leviticus 25:39
- He allowed Israel to have a king after the “manner of the nations,” but spoke out it against it in 1 Samuel 8:7.
- He also spoke out against all the evil that accompany polygyny in the various laws that I mentioned earlier.
Regulating a sin or a fallen condition is not the same as commanding it!
YAH allowed the twelve sons to become the patriarchs of the tribes because His covenant with Abraham was unbreakable. But never confuse YAH's mercy in redeeming a mess with YAH's blueprint for righteousness. The one-flesh bond is YAH’s righteousness; polygyny is man’s prideful lust driven by the demands of the flesh. It is whoredom!
From the beginning, it was one man and one woman becoming one flesh. Anything added to that equation is born of human pride, culture, and the flesh. A man can only have one covenant of marriage as YAH, Himself, has one covenant of marriage with Israel. “He sheweth His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye YAH.” Psalms 147:19-20
Also, Amos 3:2 - “You only have I known of all the families of the earth…”
Closing Statement: Stop hiding behind the patriarchs to excuse man’s flesh. The Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob never lowered His holy creation standard to accommodate human appetites. He simply kept His covenant promises in spite of them. It is time to tear down the altars of entitlement, stop calling man’s selfish departure from the Torah a "divine blessing," or “holy polygyny,” and return to the sacred unity of the original blueprint. Honor the covenant, guard the gates of your household, and stand righteous before the Creator.
