12 Monthly Challenges to Elevate Your Faith | August's Faith Challenge | The Study of the Ancients | Finding the Heart of the Law

We have reached more than half of our year, and this month, we return to the foundation. We have built our morning altars, gathered at the table of remembrance, guarded our speech, rested our minds, and given in secret. Now, we must sharpen our minds and anchor our souls in the scroll itself.

It is easy to claim a heritage, but it is another thing entirely to know the instruction that governs it. This month is about moving past shallow reading and entering into deep, immersion study.

• Pass 1: The Narrative & Context (The Big Picture)
  
• Goal: Read continuously from start to finish without stopping to analyze every detail.
  
• Focus: Absorb the overarching story, the setting, the historical timeline, and the primary message of the book.

• Pass 2: The Core Principles (Directives & Patterns)
  
• Goal: Read with a pencil or highlighter in hand.
  
• Focus: Note specific instructions, covenant conditions, promises, and the clear patterns of obedience versus disobedience.

• Pass 3: The Weightier Matters (Character & Heart)
  
• Goal: Read slowly, meditating on the deeper intentions of the text.
  
• Focus: Look specifically for themes of justice, mercy, protection for the vulnerable, and undivided devotion to uncover what the text reveals about the character of the Creator.

Beyond Proof-Texting

Many of us have fallen into the habit of “proof-texting:"pulling a single verse out of its context to validate how we already feel or what we already believe. But the Word was not given to us in isolated snippets; it was given as complete covenants, letters, histories, and visions. For example, this is how many messianic Hebrews and Christians alike take a scripture out of context in Isaiah to justify the idol worship of Jesus christ. There is no Hebrew Scripture where his name is ever mentioned or any verse that describes him as being the son of GOD.

When we only skim the surface or memorize popular phrases, we miss the golden thread that runs through the text: justice, mercy, and unwavering devotion to YAH. To walk the path of our ancestors, we must know the terrain inside and out.

The Challenge: The Three-Pass Immersion

Your challenge this month is to choose one book from the Torah (Genesis through Deuteronomy) or the Prophets (such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, or the other Twelve Prophets) and read it in its entirety three separate times over the next 30 days.

Pass	Focus	What to Look For
Pass 1: The First Reading	The Narrative & Context	Read continuously without stopping to analyze every detail. Get a sense of the big picture, the timeline, the setting, and the tone of the writer.
Pass 2: The Second Reading	The Core Principles	Highlight or note specific commands, covenant conditions, and promises. Notice the patterns of obedience versus disobedience.
Pass 3: The Third Reading	The Weightier Matters	Look specifically for themes of justice, mercy, protection for the vulnerable, and heart-level devotion. Ask yourself: What does this reveal about the character of the Creator?

Key TANAKH Passages on True Understanding

As you begin your chosen book, keep these passages near your study space to remind you why we study:

Jeremiah 9:23–24

"Thus saith YAH, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am YAH which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith YAH."

Micah 6:8

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth YAH require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy Elohim?"

Deuteronomy 6:6–7

"And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way..."

Practical Study Strategies

• Pick the Right Size: If your schedule is demanding, choose a concise prophetic book like Amos, Micah, or Haggai. If you are ready for an intense deep-dive, choose Deuteronomy or Isaiah.

• Keep a Dedicated Journal: Divide your notes into three sections, one for each pass. Do not write in vague generalities; write down specific chapters and verses that make you pause.

• Read Aloud: In ancient times, the scriptures were heard, not just read silently. Reading aloud slows down your mind and forces you to absorb every word.

Closing Statement: When we immerse ourselves in the scrolls, we cease to be driven by every wind of false doctrine. We become rooted, knowledgeable, and capable of walking out the ancient path with conviction.
