Quick Vegan Black Bean Burger
These savory, smoky black bean patties are simple to mix together and hold up well, providing a great plant-based alternative to traditional burgers.
INGREDIENTS
Main Ingredients
- 1 (15 oz) can Black Beans, rinsed, drained, and patted dry
- 1/2 cup Rolled Oats (or Quick Oats)
- 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Panko or standard)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped Red Onion
Flavor & Binder
- 2 tbsp Nutritional Yeast (for savory flavor)
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce Substitute (San-J - No Soy Tamari - Specially Brewed Soy Sauce Alternative or Simple Truth Organic® Coconut Aminos All-Purpose Seasoning Sauce)
- 1 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Cumin
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional, for heat)
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil (for mixing)
For Cooking
- 1-2 Tbsp Oil (for pan-frying/grilling)
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: PREPARE THE BASE
- Dry Beans: This is crucial. Spread the rinsed and drained black beans on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and pat them very dry.
- Mash: Transfer the dried beans to a large bowl. Using a fork or potato masher, mash about two-thirds of the beans until mostly smooth. Leave the remaining one-third whole for texture.
STEP 2: MIX THE PATTIES
- Add Flavor: Add the chopped onion, nutritional yeast, soy sauce substitution, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), and black pepper to the bowl. Mix well.
- Add Binders: Stir in the rolled oats and breadcrumbs along with 1 Tbsp of olive oil.
- Check Consistency: Mix everything thoroughly until a cohesive dough forms. If the mixture feels too wet, add an extra tablespoon of breadcrumbs. If it feels too dry and crumbly, add 1-2 teaspoons of water or broth.
- Shape: Divide the mixture into 4 or 5 equal portions. Form each portion into a patty, making them slightly flatter and wider than your burger buns (they won't shrink much when cooked).
STEP 3: COOK
- Stovetop/Pan-Fry: Heat 1-2 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook: Carefully place the patties in the hot skillet. Cook for 4-6 minutes per side, or until they develop a deep, crisp brown crust and are heated through.
- Serve: Serve hot on toasted buns with your favorite toppings (lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo, etc.). Enjoy!
