History 101 | The Spectrum of Subservience | Color Surnames in Captivity

During slavery, the assignment of colors as last names served as a specific form of categorical branding. While some surnames were taken from the plantation owner, color-based names often functioned as identifiers" used by census takers, slave traders, and overseers to sort the "stock" based on physical appearance or assigned tasks.

1. The "Visual Ledger" (Identification by Appearance)

In our Hebrew culture, your identity is "engraved" by your character and your Tribe. During slavery, names like Black, Brown, or White (often given to those of mixed heritage) were used as physical descriptors.

  • The Origin: If a slave’s lineage was unknown or they were being sold away from their original plantation, the slavemaster would often record them by their shade.
  • The Strategic Dehumanization: By reducing a man to "John Brown" or "Peter Black," the system stripped away his connection to his father. He became a color on a page, a slave without a history.

2. The "Environmental" Brand (Green, Gray, Wood)

Surnames like Green or Gray were often “topographical-a particular locality or area."

  • The Mechanism: These names frequently referred to the specific part of the estate or the "Company" the person was assigned to. A "Green" might have been assigned to the gardens or "The Green" (the common area), while a "Gray" might have been associated with a specific gray-colored house or textile mill within the plantation system.
  • The Strategic Theft: It tied the soul to a piece of property. If you are "Silas Green," you are fundamentally linked to the "green" fields of the stranger, rather than the "green pastures" of YAH. “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures…” (Psalm 23:2)

3. The "Stock Color" (Brown and White)

The names Brown and White were also heavily used during the "sorting" process.

  • The Hierarchy: These names were weaponized to create divisions within the camp. Those with lighter complexions were often given names associated with the owner's color to signify a "higher grade" of house service, while darker complexions were categorized as "field stock."
  • The Goal: To break the "national unity" of the remnant by forcing them to identify with their "shade" rather than their lineage.

The Holy Scriptures’ Perspective: From "Colors" to "Royal Gemstones"

The slave-owners used common colors to brand our ancestors as "common property." But in our heritage, colors are specific and sacred.

1. The High Priest's Breastplate (Exodus 28:17-20)

"And thou shalt set in it settings of stones... a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle... an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond... a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst... a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper."

  • The Contrast: The world calls you "Brown" or "Black" to make you a commodity. Elohim calls you by names represented by Gemstones to show you are a "Peculiar Treasure" (Exodus 19:5). “And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.” Exodus 28:21

2. The Purified Identity (Isaiah 1:18)

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith YAH: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

  • The Vision: This is the "color" that really matters - the color of purification. The stranger gave them a "color name" to keep them in the “shadows of gross darkness" - separated from Elohim. Now, Elohim offers to wash your sins so that your identity is linked to His covenant, not your pedigree in the slavery.

3. The Name that Endures (Isaiah 56:5)

"Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off."

  • The Goal: In returning back to YAH, we must stop identifying with the "surnames" of our captors. Whether your last name is a "plantation owner" or a color," it is a label of slavery. Your Everlasting Name is waiting for you in the "Book of Remembrance."

Morah’s Reflection:

Slavery tried to turn our nation into a 'color code' for their ledgers - separated from our lineage. They still call us ‘Brown,’ ‘Green,’ ‘White,’ and ‘Black’ to say we are nothing, no better than dust on the ground. But remember: Man was made from the Adamah (the red earth), and into that dust, Elohim breathed the Spirit of Life. You are not a 'color' on a slave ship; you are a Living Stone on the breastplate of the High Priest. It is time to stop answering to the labels of the slave-owner and start listening for the 'Name' the King of Israel is calling you.

Prayer (The Reclamation of the Name)

Almighty YAH, I thank You for opening my eyes that I am more than a 'color' or a 'category' in the ledgers of the slavemasters. I renounce the 'labels' of 'Green, White, Black, and Brown' that were used to brand my fathers as property. Grant me a (Hearing Heart) to receive the 'Everlasting Name' You have promised. I choose to see myself as a 'Precious Stone' in the Breastplate of the High Priest, valued and protected by Your Law. Let the 'darkness' of the slave identity fade, and let the 'light' of my true Tribal Inheritance shine forth. We are the 'Named of the Covenant,' who are returning back to our culture, heritage, and our Elohim. (Isaiah 56:5, Exodus 28:29)

Elohim still loves you, Israel. The call remains the same: Choose Life, Choose Blessing, Choose Undivided Devotion. Repent, Return, and be free from the shadows of gross darkness.
