Vegan Southern Baked Candid Yams (or Sweet Potatoes)

These yams are sweet, buttery, and baked until tender, creating a comforting side dish perfect for any gathering.

This dish uses a rich blend of vegan butter, brown sugar, and spices to create a sweet, syrupy glaze that coats tender sweet potatoes.

INGREDIENTS

Yams/Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 lbs Yams OR Sweet Potatoes (about 4-5 medium), peeled and sliced into 1-inch thick rounds or large cubes

Syrup/Glaze

  • 1/2 cup Vegan Butter
  • 1 cup Light Brown Sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp Ground Cloves (optional, for intense spice)
  • Pinch of Salt

Optional Topping

  • 1 cup Mini Vegan Marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Pecans

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: PREPARE THE YAMS

  1. Preheat & Prep Pan: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange Yams: Arrange the peeled and sliced/cubed yams in a single, even layer in the prepared baking dish.

STEP 2: MAKE & ADD THE GLAZE

  1. Melt Butter: In a medium saucepan, melt the vegan butter over medium heat.
  2. Mix Glaze: Stir in the brown sugar, water, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (if using), and salt. Stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer for 1 minute.
  3. Pour Over Yams: Pour the entire glaze mixture evenly over the yams in the baking dish. Gently toss the yams to ensure they are well coated.

STEP 3: BAKE

  1. Initial Bake (Covered): Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 40 minutes. This traps the steam and helps the yams cook thoroughly and tenderly.
  2. Final Bake (Uncovered): Remove the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C). Bake for an additional 20-30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the yams are very tender when pierced with a fork and the glaze has thickened into a rich, sticky syrup.

STEP 4: OPTIONAL TOPPING

  1. Add Topping: If using the optional toppings, remove the yams from the oven. Sprinkle the pecans and mini vegan marshmallows evenly over the top.
  2. Broil: Return the dish to the oven (or set to the broiler on low) for 2-5 minutes, watching carefully, until the marshmallows are toasted golden brown.
  3. Serve: Serve immediately while hot. Enjoy!
