How to Listen for GOD'S Voice

Aaron, Moses, and Miriam

GOD is always speaking to us, but are we listening? In the Holy Scriptures (Old Testament), GOD spoke to His people, the children of Israel, through prophets, prophetesses, dreams, and visions. But how can we hear GOD's voice today?

The scriptures tells us that GOD is always speaking to us, but we may not always recognize His voice. Here are some tips on how to listen for GOD's voice:

1. Be still and know that He is GOD.

  • Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am GOD; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

GOD often speaks to us in the still, small voice. When we are busy and distracted, it can be difficult to hear His voice. Take some time each day to be still. Quiet your mind through meditation and prayer.

2. Study the Holy Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi).

  • Joshua 1:8: "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."

The Holy Scriptures is GOD's word, and it is full of wisdom and guidance. It will supply you with the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of HIS laws, to keep you on that straight and narrow path, and to hide you in the day of evil. When we study it, we are opening ourselves up to hear GOD's voice and to follow His guidance.

3. Seek GOD Continuously!

  • 1 Chronicles 16:11: “Seek YAH and the strength He gives. Seek His presence continually!”

Daily and consistent prayer, meditation, and bible study is the key to hearing GOD’s voice. All too often, we seek Him when we need a blessing, a favor, or relief from our daily stresses and toils. GOD is near to those who are near to Him.

4.  Pray.

  • Jeremiah 33:3: "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

Prayer is a two-way conversation with GOD. When we pray, we are not only speaking to GOD, but we are also listening for His response. Remember, patience is one of the virtues of a righteous person. GOD may not answer you when you want Him to, but He will provide you with an answer in His timing.

5. Seek wise counsel.

  • Proverbs 11:14: "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers."

GOD often speaks to us through other people. Seek out wise counsel from trusted friends, family members, or spiritual leaders. Never seek “wise” counsel from a fool because wisdom is too high for a fool.

6. Trust your gut.

  • 1 Kings 19:12: "After the earthquake came a fire, but YAH was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper."

GOD often speaks to us through our intuition. If you have a gut feeling about something, it is important to pay attention to it. Pray and meditate before making rash decisions. Weigh out the matter (the consequences, both good and bad).

Additional Tips:

  • Keep a journal. Write down your thoughts and feelings, and any insights you receive from GOD.
  • Be patient. It may take some time to learn how to hear GOD's voice.
  • Don't give up. Keep seeking GOD's voice, and He will reveal himself to you. Persistence is key to having a genuine, one-on-one relationship with the Most High. Through tests and trials are things revealed.

Conclusion

Listening for GOD's voice is a process. It takes time, patience, and practice. But the rewards are great. When we learn to hear GOD's voice, we can experience His guidance, wisdom, love, and blessings.
