The Importance of Cleanliness in the Holy Scriptures (Torah): A Timeless Message
In ancient Israel, cleanliness wasn't just about personal hygiene; it was a profound expression of faith and a way of life. The Torah, the sacred text of GOD’S chosen people, we, who are the children of Israel, is filled with laws and guidelines concerning cleanliness. These laws, often seen as archaic and irrelevant today because most of the world refer to them as old or outdated laws that are done away with, actually contain profound wisdom that resonates with us even in the 21st century.
The Torah emphasizes that cleanliness is not merely about physical appearance but also reflects a state of spiritual purity and obedience to GOD’S commands. It also teaches that a clean heart and a pure spirit are essential for a meaningful relationship with GOD. This concept of inner purity is echoed in various passages throughout the Hebrew Bible, such as Psalm chapter 24 verses 3 & 4, which states, "Who may ascend into the hill of YAH? Or who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear deceitfully."
Moreover, the Torah connects cleanliness to the concept of holiness. The children of Israel were instructed to maintain a state of ceremonial purity to set themselves apart as a holy people, dedicated to serving GOD. This emphasis on holiness is evident in the numerous laws and regulations regarding ritual purity, dietary restrictions, and the separation of clean and unclean things. The laws regarding ritual impurity associated with various bodily discharges, including menstruation, is not solely about physical uncleanliness but rather a state of ritual impurity that affected an individual's participation in certain activities and interactions within the community and the temple. Individuals in a state of ritual impurity were restricted from entering certain sacred spaces. Below are some of the most common restrictions and how they can be applied to our daily lives outside of the land of Israel. Contrary to some belief systems, we can still strive to maintain a sense of purity without the actual ritualistic practices associated with the laws of cleanliness.
- Summary of Leviticus Chapters 11 through 15 (Laws Regarding Food, Bodily Discharges, Skin Diseases):
- Principle: Emphasis on hygiene, disease prevention, and separation of clean from unclean foods.
- Modern Day Application:
- Practice good personal hygiene (handwashing, showering, brushing teeth, etc).
- Maintain clean living spaces to prevent the spread of germs.
- Follow sanitary guidelines regarding disease control. Initiate quarantine and isolation procedures when ill.
- Also, be mindful of how you handle and dispose of bodily waste.
- Cleanliness is also essential for good health, especially when consuming animal flesh. Raw flesh can contain harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It is important to sanitize all surfaces and utensils that come into contact with raw flesh. This includes your hands, cutting boards, and knives. Cook all flesh to a ‘well-done' state.
- The prohibition or the non-consumption of (unclean) animals that scavenge or feed on unclean things can help prevent the spread of diseases.
- Leviticus Chapter 11 (Laws Regarding Clean and Unclean Foods):
- Principle: The distinction between clean and unclean animals serve to maintain holiness and separation from other nations.
- Modern Day Application:
- The concept of discerning between what is "clean" and "unclean" can be applied not only to food but also to various aspects of life, encouraging us to make wise choices about what we consume, both physically and spiritually.
- By adhering to the dietary laws, we demonstrate our commitment to GOD and our unique identity as His chosen people. We should never consume anything that would cause us to be unclean or unholy.
- Leviticus Chapters 13 & 14 (Laws Concerning Skin Diseases):
- Principle: Isolation and quarantine to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
- Modern Day Application:
- Follow health guidelines for contagious diseases (e.g., staying home when sick, inform others of your illness).
- Initiate the need for isolation and quarantine to protect vulnerable family members and friends.
- Seek medical attention when you have symptoms of a contagious disease.
- Leviticus Chapter 15 (Laws Regarding Bodily Discharges):
- Principle: Laws regarding personal hygiene, and the handling of potentially infectious bodily fluids.
- Modern Day Application:
- Practice good personal hygiene, especially during menstruation.
- Be mindful of the proper disposal of used personal hygiene products.
- Be mindful of how you handle any bodily fluids.
- Leviticus 17 (Laws Regarding Blood):
- Principle: Reverence for life and the sacredness of blood.
- Modern Day Application:
- Support ethical practices in healthcare and medical research while exposing companies that test on animals, and animal shelters that kill healthy animals. Petition these companies in support of alternative options. Many animal rights groups circulate petitions year-round.
- Respect the sanctity of life in all its forms, even animals.
- Practice safe handling of blood and bodily fluids.
- Be mindful of how you treat all living creatures. Proverbs 12:10, “A righteous person cares for the life of his animal but even the most compassionate acts of the wicked are cruel.”
- Numbers 19 (Purification Rituals):
- Principle: Symbolic cleansing and purification from defilement.
- Modern Day Application:
- Purify your mind and body by engaging in practices that promote mental and emotional well-being (e.g., mindfulness, reflection, meditation, counseling, etc).
- Seek forgiveness and reconciliation to cleanse past relationships of conflict.
- Practice self-care to maintain a healthy emotional and spiritual state of being.
- When you make a mistake, take the necessary steps needed to make things right.
- Deuteronomy Chapter 23 Verses 12 through 14 (Sanitation in the Camp):
- Principle: Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment to prevent disease and promote well-being.
- Modern Day Application:
- Practice proper waste (trash) disposal, recycling, and sanitation in homes and neighborhoods, including those of our animals or pets.
- Support public sanitation initiatives and environmental protection acts.
- Keep your personal living space clean.
- When in public spaces, leave the space as clean, or cleaner, than when you arrived. In other words, clean behind yourself. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, rather holiness.
