52 Weeks, 52 Activities for Couples | A Year of Connection and Growth | Week 1 | Spend Time Outdoors

The first activity is inspired by the creation story itself. In Genesis Chapter 2 Verse 15, we read, 'YAH GOD took the man and placed him in the orchard in Eden to care for it and to maintain it.' This act of stewardship, of nurturing and cultivating, mirrors the very essence of a strong partnership. Just as Adam was entrusted with the care of Eden, Genesis 2:24 reveals the sacred bond of marriage, where a man leaves his father and his mother and cleave (hold fast) to his wife, and they become one flesh. You cannot become "one flesh" my brothers when you are married to your children, yourself, the world, your ex-girlfriend, your vehicle, your job, or anything or anyone else besides your wife, period! Both verses speak to the responsibility and intimacy of cultivating a blessed union, whether with the earth or with a spouse. Marriage is a journey and not a destination!

For this week's activity, I encourage you to spend time in nature together. Explore the wonders of nature with these activities:

Go for a walk in a park, hike a scenic trail, or simply sit under the stars and marvel at the beauty of creation. As you connect with the natural world, reflect on the wonder of your own connection and the divine spark that unites you. Discover how the busyness of life diminished this spark and how, going forward, you plan to prioritize spending time reconnecting with nature and each other. Some suggestions for the future are: gardening, (fruit and vegetables or maybe flower gardening); bike riding, camping, volunteer at neighborhood community gardens, city beautification projects, or start a new outdoor hobby together etc. The ideas are endless! The plan is to get you two together creating activities that deepens, strengthens, and/or re-ignite your bond and cultivate “oneness”.

As we conclude our journey through week one of 52 weeks of activities, remember that cultivating
"oneness" is an ongoing process. It requires intentionality, effort, and a willingness to grow together.

Here's a bullet list of nature-based activities designed to foster connection and create shared memories:

  • Hiking or Trail Walking: Explore scenic trails at state or national parks, enjoy breathtaking views while getting some beneficial exercise.
  • Picnics in the Park or Backyard: Pack a delicious lunch and find a peaceful spot to enjoy each other's company amidst nature's beauty.
