Names As Markers of Inheritance
Names as a Connection to Inheritance:
This inheritance can be both tangible and intangible. Land as a Tangible Blessing: The land of Canaan, now called Israel, was not just a piece of territory; it was a tangible symbol of GOD’S blessing, His faithfulness to His promises, and His presence among His people. Also, the land was divided into twelve tribes with Joseph’s two sons each inheriting land. The tribe of Levi was excluded from inheriting land because YAH is their inheritance. Nevertheless, by taking on the last name of Israel, Yisrael in Hebrew or the last name of one of the thirteen tribes because there are two tribes of Joseph, ties you to your inheritance. Intangible Blessing: might involve family traditions, cultural practices, or even personality traits passed down through generations. Our names act as a constant reminder of this inheritance, connecting us to our roots and the legacy we carry.
The act of naming in the Holy Scriptures is far from trivial. It represents:
- Authority and dominion.
- The essence (character) and identity of the person named.
- Connection to our inheritance.
- Connection to our heritage.
- Transformation and new beginnings.
- A connection to GOD’S character and presence.
Understanding the significance of naming enriches our understanding and provides insights into the deeper meanings behind the stories and persons in the holy scriptures. It reveals that names are not just labels but powerful expressions of identity, inheritance, heritage, destiny, and relationship with GOD.
